Hawaii County Civil Defense Flood Advisory Update for 7:45 a.m. October 19, 2014

The National Weather Service has issued a Flash Flood Advisory for the Island of Hawaii effective through 10:15 a.m. this morning. Heavy rains are being reported in various parts of the island and flood conditions may be expected.

All roads are open at this time however motorists are advised to drive with caution and to be prepared for hazardous conditions and to avoid driving through runoff and ponding on roadways.

All County and State Parks have been reopened today however camping remains restricted until tomorrow Monday October 20th.

In addition, all schools will be open tomorrow Monday October 20th.

Campers and hikers should avoid low lying flood prone areas. People should stay away from streams, drainage ditches and low lying areas prone to flooding. The rainfall and runoff will cause hazardous driving conditions due to ponding, reduced visibility and poor braking action.

Do not cross fast flowing or rising water in your vehicle or on foot. Turn around, don’t drown.

A Small Craft Advisory is in effect until 6 p.m. Sunday for Oahu Windward waters, the Kaiwi Channel, Maui County Windward and Leeward waters, Maalaea Bay, the Pailolo and Alenuihaha Channels along with Big Island Windward, Leeward and Southeast waters.

The Mauna Kea Summit Access Road is closed above the Visitor Information Station due to poor weather and extensive damage to the roadway caused by Hurricane Ana.

Updates on the summit road can be found at: http://mkwc.ifa.hawaii.edu/current/road-conditions/
