West Hawaii Community Forums: Earthquakes, property taxes

MEDIA RELEASE

Community Enterprises resumes its 2014 schedule with two forums in the month of October.

The two dates are 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 15 and 6 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 16 at the Makaeo Pavilion, Old Kona Airport State Park.

On Oct. 15 is a special presentation “Earthquakes in Hawaii: What we all should know—and do.”

The island has a long history of destructive earthquakes, and some have severely impacted West Hawaii — most recently, the magnitude-6.7 and 6.0 earthquakes on Oct. 15, 2006. But there are actions you can take to prevent or minimize personal injury during the next “big one.”

Join Hawaiian Volcano Observatory seismologist Wes Thelen as he presents an overview of damaging earthquakes in Hawaii, including current theories on where and why they occur and what you can do to keep you and your family safe when they do — and learn about
the 2nd annual Great Hawaii ShakeOut, a statewide earthquake awareness and preparedness event.

On Oct. 16, the community forum will focus on Hawaii County Real Property Taxation. Stan Sitko, Hawaii County Real Property Tax Administrator will present, “Real Property Tax Assessment – 101.”

Hawaii Council Member Margaret Wille will highlight the work of the Hawaii County Real Property Taxation Task Force. Council Members Dru Kanuha and Karen Eoff will also provide County Council updates.

Community Enterprises Inc. is a private non-profit organization with a 501c (3) designation from the IRS. Its mission is to bring educational resources to the residents of West Hawaii so they can better participate in the public policy issues that affect their lives and their communities.

The events are free.
