Student pharmacists to pledge commitment in White Coat Ceremony (Oct. 12)

MEDIA RELEASE

Eighty-three student pharmacists will recite the Oath of a Pharmacist at the University of Hawaii at Hilo Daniel K. Inouye College of Pharmacy’s (DKICP) White Coat Ceremony in the UH Hilo Performing Arts Center on Oct. 12. The event, which takes place from 2-4 p.m., is open to the public.

The ceremony signifies the rite of passage for students entering their first year in the professional program to affirm their commitment to the values of their profession, including professionalism, respect, integrity and compassion. Distinctive to Hawaii’s ceremony is when each student receives the traditional flower lei as they enter the stage to recite the oath in front of fellow students, faculty and staff, community supporters and family.

The keynote speaker will be Sherry Bracken, news reporter for Hawaii Public Radio and producer and host of Island Issues, a weekly interview program on LAVA 105.3 FM and KKOA 107.7 FM.

The students will also be addressed by UH Hilo Chancellor Don Straney and DKICP Founding Dean John M. Pezzuto as well as Associate Dean for Academic Affairs Edward Fisher.

Four new pharmacy residents who are working on Oahu and already have their Pharm.D. will be recognized along with the Pharm.D. candidates.

Beginning first-year residencies at Pacific Mental Health are Goldie Leh and Michelle Kim.

Beginning second-year residencies are Lehua Kay in Mental Health Psychiatry at Hawaii State Hospital and Barry Nakaoka at The Queen’s Medical Center.

The event is sponsored by Walgreens. Scott Sutton, Walgreens Hawaii district manager, will make a presentation.

College of Pharmacy achieves accreditation to offer continuing education for psychologists

The University of Hawaii at Hilo Daniel K. Inouye College of Pharmacy (DKICP) has received approval as sponsor of continuing education (CE) for doctoral-level psychologists from the American Psychological Association (APA) Continuing Education Committee.

“With this designation, DKICP becomes the only organization in Hawaii that can offer CE to three licensed health care providers: psychologists, physicians and pharmacists,” said Karen Pellegrin, director of continuing education/strategic planning for DKICP. “This is especially gratifying as we enter the age of interprofessional healthcare.” The College received accreditation to offer CE to pharmacists as well as physicians in 2009.

The CE credit is a requirement for psychologists to remain licensed. DKICP becomes the fourth APA-approved center in Hawaii along with Hawaii Center for Psychology, Hawaii Psychological Association and Tripler Army Medical Center.

The approval is good for two years.

Representing all three professions, DKICP will present the first interdisciplinary CE course in Waikiki Oct. 1-3. The workshop is called “Pharmacotherapy in the Age of DSM-5,” referring to APA’s Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders.
