Governor releases $855,000 for ag projects, film facility

MEDIA RELEASE

Gov. Neil Abercrombie has announced the release of $855,000 for various capital improvement projects that invest in Hawaii’s local agriculture and film industries.

“We are moving forward on our sustainability initiatives by decreasing our dependence on imported foods,” Abercrombie said. “These projects will give many of our local farmers the tools that they need to overcome the challenges that face their industry.”

“Hawaii’s film industry plays an important role in the overall health of the state’s economy,” said Hawaii Film Commissioner Donne Dawson. “These funds will help us determine exactly what the industry needs in terms of infrastructure and where the best possible place in the islands might be to develop that infrastructure. The process will go a long way in helping us take Hawaii’s film and creative media industries to the next level and send a clear message that the state is serious about being one of the preeminent filming destinations in the world.”

Allotment of funds for the following projects, identified by state legislators, has been approved by the Governor:

* $300,000 – Kunia Agricultural Park, Oahu

Supplemental design funds to create a 150-acre agriculture park located on prime agricultural land in Central Oahu. The plans include provisions to subdivide the land parcel into approximately 24 agricultural lots with 24 corresponding residential lots, and coordinating adjacent infrastructure to make utilities available to the lots. The design funds may also be used to conduct an environmental assessment.

* $250,000 – Waiahole Water System Improvements, Oahu

Planning and design funds for improvements to install a pipe in deteriorated sections of the Waiahole Ditch and to install a Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) system.

* $205,000 – State Irrigation System Reservoir Safety Improvements, statewide

Supplemental design funds for the construction of safety improvements to reservoirs throughout the state. The project will provide necessary improvements that include removal of vegetation, embankment lining, repair and/or replacement of gate valves, spillways, outlet channels and other features of the reservoirs.

* $100,000 – Creative Media/Film Studio Facility Study/Planning, statewide

Department of Business, Economic Development & Tourism planning funds for the purposes of a market analysis and site recommendations for a new creative media/film studio facility, including a study to help determine the market needs, size, location and composition of the facilities. The study will consider the islands of Kauai, Oahu, Maui and Hawaii.
