During the week of September 22, 2014, through September 28, 2014, Hawaiʻi Island police arrested 21 motorists for driving under the influence of an intoxicant. Ten of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes. Two were under the age of 21.
So far this year, there have been 863 DUI arrests compared with 977 during the same period last year, a decrease of 11.7 percent. The numbers of arrests by district were:

There have been 1,150 major accidents so far this year compared with 1,032 during the same period last year, an increase of 11.4 percent.
So far this year, there have been nine traffic fatalities on Hawaiʻi Island compared with 22 during the same period last year, a decrease of 59.1 percent.
To date, six fatalities were related to drugs (3), alcohol (0), or a combination of both (3).
DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue island wide.
