HI-PAL basketball champions announced

Fifty-six youths from eight teams participated in the HI-PAL “Click It or Ticket” 14-and-under basketball championships this past weekend at Carvalho Park in Hilo.

In the open division finals, Kona Stingrays edged Hoop Dreams Gold 33-29 to claim the title. Quinten Hanato led the Stingrays with eight points. Kiaʻi Apele also tallied eight points for the runners-up.Members of the championship Stingrays team included Hanato, Cherilyn Molina, Mikayla Tablit, Tanniya Uchida, Tyler Jacinto, Kaleb Medeiros, Jaden Basque, Steve Texeira Jr. and Seth Mattos.

In the girls division, Wahine Ryders pulled away from Stray-Kats 42-30 to claim the championship. Mandy Kawaha scored 13 points and Mindy Kawaha added 12 to pace the champions. Kelsie Imai led Stray-Kats with 13 points.
Members of the championship Wahine Ryders team included the Kawaha sisters, Jamila Collins-Ebanez, Zaelyn Liu, Keani Midel, Madison Hwang, Veda Galima, Keirsten Agonias and Alyssa Padilla.

“Click It or Ticket” is a national education and enforcement campaign to increase seat belt use and decrease traffic fatalities and injuries. The Hawaiʻi Police Department encourages all youth, teens and adults to use their seat belts.
