The National Weather Service in Honolulu extended the flood advisory for the Big Island until 2 a.m. Monday (July 21).

At 10:37 p.m. rain gauges at the Hilo airport showed heavy rain falling at a rate of over an inch per hour. Weather radar showed more locally heavy rains are moving over the area.

Other locations in the advisory include, but are not limited to, Laupahoehoe, Hilo, Mountain View and Glenwood.

A flash flood watch is also in effect for all islands until 6 p.m. Monday (July 21).

Campers and hikers should avoid low lying flood prone areas. People should stay away from streams, drainage ditches and low lying areas prone to flooding. The rainfall and runoff will cause hazardous driving conditions due to ponding, reduced visibility and poor braking action.

Do not cross fast flowing or rising water in your vehicle or on foot. Turn around, don’t drown.
