Kona Marathon course, road closures (June 22)

Marathon Course

The Kona Marathon starts at the Keauhou Shopping Center on Alii Drive, just south of Kailua-Kona.

The course begins heading north on Alii Drive through Kailua-Kona and up to the intersection of Alii Drive and Kuakini Highway.

The course then turns left on Kuakini Highway to “The Old Airport” (a real airport made into a park after the current airport was built).

The course then jogs right up Makala Boulevard through the Kona Commons Shopping Center and then left onto Queen Kaahumanu Highway (Highway 19).

Continuing on Queen Kaahumanu Highway past the Natural Energy Lab Road (OTEC).

The course then doubles back to the finish at the Sheraton Kona Resort and Spa at Keauhou Bay. There is a GU Energy Gel Aid Station located on the course.

The Kona Marathon starts at 5:30 am at the Keauhou Shopping Center.

Half Marathon Course

The Kona Half Marathon starts at Keauhou Shopping Center on Alii Drive just south of Kailua-Kona.

The course begins heading north on Alii Drive through Kailua-Kona to the intersection of Alii Drive and Kuakini Highway.

The course then turns left on Kuakini Highway to “The Old Airport” (a real airport made into a park after the current airport was built), then doubles back to finish at the Sheraton Kona Resort and Spa at Keauhou Bay.

There are Aid Stations located approximately every mile.

The Kona Half Marathon starts at 6 am at the Keauhou Shopping Center.

The Kona Marathon Events are out and back courses starting at the Keauhou Shopping Center signal on Alii drive and finishing at the Sheraton Kona Resort.

After traveling north on Alii Drive through town, the course will turn left (north) on Kuakini Hwy and proceed to the Old Airport.

Participants will then turn right (east) on Makala Blvd. The course will then turn left (north) onto Queen Kaahumanu Hwy.

The runners/walkers will travel 5 1/2 miles (1/4 mile past the OTEC Road on Queen K) turn around and return to the Sheraton Kona Resort using the same route.

Road closures for Southbound lanes only (Northbound lanes remain open):

* Southbound Alii Drive – from Palani Rd to Kamehameha 3 Rd – 5:00 am – Noon

* Southbound Kuakini Hwy – from Makala Blvd to Palani Rd – 5:45 am – 10:45 am

* Southbound Makala Blvd – from Queen Kaahumanu Hwy to Kuakini Hwy – 6:00 am – 10:30 am

* The Queen Kaahumanu Hwy will remain open in both directions during the race. However, the makai (west) shoulder will be coned off to separate runners from traffic.

Motorists are advised to use caution.

Shuttles

For those staying at the Sheraton: take the shuttle to the start beginning at 4:15 am from the Convention Center and finish at the Sheraton.

For those not staying at the Sheraton: park at the Keauhou Shopping Center, finish at the Sheraton and take shuttle back to the shopping center to retrieve your car anytime before noon.
