The National Weather Service in Honolulu has issued a Flood Advisory for the Big Island until 3:15 p.m. Thursday (May 1).

At 12:12 p.m. weather radar showed showers producing moderate to heavy rainfall in the Hilo and Puna districts. These showers will combine with previous rainfall to produce localized flooding.

Locations in this weather advisory include, but are not limited to, Hilo, Papaikou and Hawaiian Paradise Park.

Campers and hikers should avoid low lying flood prone areas. People should stay away from streams, drainage ditches and low lying areas prone to flooding. The rainfall and runoff will cause hazardous driving conditions due to ponding, reduced visibility and poor braking action.

Do not cross fast flowing or rising water in your vehicle or on foot. Turn around, don’t drown.

This advisory may be extended beyond 3:15 p.m. should heavy rains continue.
