Brushfire leads to lane closure on Mamalahoa Hwy Thursday (April 24), roadway now open

At 1:05 p.m. Thursday (April 24) firefighters responded to an alarm for a brushfire near the 29 Mile Marker of Mamalaoha Highway (Route 190) in Kona.

Hawaii County firefighers with assistance of a Pohakuloa Training Area tanker worked on putting out the brushfire with ground units and Choppers One and Two performing water drops. The highway was closed to one lane of traffic as firefighers fought the blaze which was declared out at 1:45 p.m.

There were no injuries reported, no threat to structures and the fire consumed four acres of land. The owner of the property was reported to be Bishop Estate, the cause of the fire was undetermined.

Both lanes are now open near the 27 mile marker on Mamalahoa Highway (Route 190) as the brush fire has been extinguished.

One lane has been closed near the 27 mile marker on Mamalahoa Highway (Route 190), about two miles North of Makalei Golf Course, due to a brush fire. The public is being asked to avoid this location if possible and take alternate routes as crews address this fire. Please expect delays.
