Flood advisory issued as heavy rains fall on Big Island

The flood advisory for the Big Island has been extended until 11:30 p.m. Friday (March 28).

At 8:35 p.m. weather radar showed heavy rain extending from Pepeekeo to Hilo to Mountain View and Pahoa. The rain was nearly stationary. Other heavy showers may move ashore from Volcanoes National Park to Pahala.

The locations in the advisory include, but are not limited to, Pepeekeo, Papaikou, Paauilo, Ookala, Laupahoehoe, Honomu and Hakalau.

Campers and hikers should avoid low lying flood prone areas. People should stay away from streams, drainage ditches and low lying areas prone to flooding. The rainfall and runoff will cause hazardous driving conditions due to ponding, reduced visibility and poor braking action.

Do not cross fast flowing or rising water in your vehicle or on foot. Turn around, don’t drown.

This advisory may be extended beyond 11:30 p.m. if heavy rains persist.

The National Weather Service in Honolulu has issued a flood advisory for the Big Island until 5:30 p.m. Friday (March 28).

At 2:30 p.m. weather radar showed moderate to heavy rainfall along the slopes of the Ka‘u district. Rainfall was heaviest between Kapapala Ranch and Kahuku Ranch with rates up to an inch per hour. This area of heavy rain was nearly stationary.

Other locations in the flood advisory include, but are not limited to Wood Valley, Naalehu, Sea Mountain, Pahala and Volcano.

The National Weather Service in Honolulu has issued a flash flood watch for all Hawaiian Islands through Saturday night (March 29). Heavy rain showers have been observed on Oahu and in Maui County.

There is also a series of small North and Northwest swells over the next several days with a larger Northwest swell expected Wednesday night and Thursday. Strengthening trade winds wearly next week will cause an increase in short period choppy surf along East facing shores. This increase in trade winds may cause wind and sea conditions to reach small craft advisory levels around Maui County and the Big Island.
