Fire dept and Coast Guard aid kayakers blown out to sea off the Kohala Coast

Fire department and Coast Guard crews rescued a pair of kayakers in distress off the Kohala Coast Sunday afternoon (March 23).

At 12:27 p.m.Hawaii County Fire Department was notified of kayakers in distress off the Kohala Coast outside of the nine mile-marker of Akoni Pule Highway. The father of the kayakers met with fire/rescue crews onshore as Chopper Two was able to locate the pair of kayakers who were blown out to sea by very strong 20-30 mph tradewinds, currents and rough seas.

The U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Kiska was in the area on a training exercise and responded to aid the kayakers who they brought aboard. The two people were brought to Kawaihae Harbor. The kayakers did not need medical attention.

This is the second pair of kaykers needing to be rescued off the Kohala Coast in the past week. On Wednesday (March 19) a pair of kayakers were rescued.
