Kayakers rescued off Kohala Coast Wednesday (March 19)

By Hawaii 24/7 Staff

Fire/rescue crews responded to a 10:59 a.m. alarm Wednesday (March 19) to an area off-shore Akoni Pule Highway near the 12 mile marker in North Kohala for kayakers in distress.

The fire department’s Chopper Two had spotted the kayakers and hovered over the area to determine if the pair was in distress and to see if they could paddle back to shore.

Witnesses on shore and family members of the kayakers spoke to rescue crews on land where rescue and medic units were staged.

The fire department’s Chopper One arrived on the scene and was able to rescue the kayakers along with the kayak and brought the two people to shore.

The rescued people did not require medical attention. Fire dispatch reports currents may have carried the kayakers into the open ocean.
