Wind advisory in effect for Big Island summits

The National Weather Service in Honolulu has issued a wind advisory for the summits of Mauna Loa and Mauna Kea above 8,000 feet until noon today (March 4).

Winds are forecast to come from the West at 40-50 mph with localized gusts up to 65 mph.

The strong winds can make driving difficult especially for high profile vehicles. Motorists should use caution while driving. The winds can also forcefully swing doors open or shut so use caution when opening or closing vehicle doors.

Also a small craft advisory for mariners is in effect until 4 p.m. Wednesday (March 5) for the Alenuihaha Channel and Big Island Windward waters.
