Winter storm warning for Big Island summits

The National Weather Service in Honolulu has issued a winter storm warning until 6 p.m. this evening (March 3) for the summits of Mauna Loa and Mauna Kea over 11,000 feet.

Snow accumulations up to five inches this morning were recorded and another inch of snow is expected this afternoon.

Winds are coming from the West at 60-80 mph with localized gusts to over 100 mph. Temperatures are reported to be in the 20s with periods of near zero visibility.

The Mauna Kea summit access road has been closed due to poor driving conditions.
