High surf and small craft advisories for West facing shores of Big Island

Hawaii County Civil Defense Message

The National Weather Service in Honolulu has issued a high surf advisory through 6 p.m. this evening (March 3) for West facing shores of the Big Island.

Surf is forecast to be in the six to 10 foot range.

Authorities have closed Kahaluu, Laaloa (Magic Sands), Hapuna beaches due to the hazardous conditions.

Coastal areas can expect strong breaking waves, shore breaks and strong longshore and rip currents making swimming difficult and dangerous.

Beachgoers, swimmers and surfers should heed the advice given by ocean safety officials and be careful. Know your limits and when in doubt, don’t go out.

Boaters should expect recreational surfers and bodyboarders using harbor channels to access surfing areas.

Small craft advisories are in effect until 6 p.m. this evening for West facing shores of the Big Island.
