Flags at half-staff for former Rep. Evans

MEDIA RELEASE

As a mark of respect for the memory of former state Rep. Faith Patricia Evans, Gov. Neil Abercrombie has ordered that the flags of the United States and State of Hawaii shall be flown at half-staff at all state offices and agencies as well as the Hawaii National Guard from sunrise to sunset on Friday, Jan. 17, 2014, the day of her memorial services.

She died Jan. 9 in Kailua at age 76.

“Hawaii is a state with a long history of women pioneers, and Faith stood proudly among them,” Abercrombie said. “I value the time we served together in the state Legislature and have great respect for her significant and lasting efforts in honoring and preserving the multiethnic heritage of these islands.”

Born in Honolulu, Evans served in the state House of Representatives from 1974 to 1980 and was the nation’s first female U.S. marshal. She was a U.S. marshal for the District of Hawaii for nearly a decade. Also a registered nurse, she worked at St. Francis Hospital.

Evans founded the Puerto Rican Heritage Society in Hawaii and, in 2000, led the Puerto Rican Centennial Commission of Hawaii.
