Flash Flood Warning and Marine Advisories in effect

The National Weather Service in Honolulu has issued a Flash Flood Warning for the Big Island until 2:30 a.m. Monday (Jan 6).

At 11:18 p.m. weather radar showed heavy rain in a thunderstorm near Ookala or about 26 miles Northwest of Hilo. Radar estimated rainfall rates were in excess of three inches per hour in this area. The area of heavy rain was nearly stationary.

About three to four inches of water was flowing across Highway 19 North of Kaawalii Gulch making driving dangerous.

Campers and hikers should avoid low lying flood prone areas. People should stay away from streams, drainage ditches and low lying areas prone to flooding. The rainfall and runoff will cause hazardous driving conditions due to ponding, reduced visibility and poor braking action.

Do not cross fast flowing or rising water in your vehicle or on foot. Turn around, don’t drown.

A High Surf Advisory is in effect until 6 a.m. Monday (Jan 6) for North facing shores of the Big Island. A Small Craft Advisory is also in effect until 6 p.m. Monday for waters South of the Big Island along with the Alenuihaha Channels.
