Marine advisories for boaters due to strong storm off Big Island

The National Weather Service in Honolulu has issued a special marine warning for the Southeast and Windward waters of the Big Island until 8:45 a.m.

At 7:38 a.m. weather radar showed a thunderstorm producing strong winds of 34 knots or greater three nautical miles South of FAD Buoy KH or about 26 nautical miles SouthEast of Hilo moving South at 10 knots.

Mariners can expect gusty winds, locally higher seas, dangerous lightning and reduced visibility in the heavy rain. Mariners should seek safe harbor immediately until the storm passes.

Frequent lightning is occurring with this storm. If caught on the open water stay below deck and, if possible, keep away from ungrounded metal objects.

A small craft advisory is also in effect until 6 p.m. tonight (Dec 30) for all Hawaiian waters except Leeward waters of Maui, including Maalaea Bay and waters South of the Big Island.
