National gas price outlook for 2014

MEDIA RELEASE

Some notes about the upcoming year in gas prices from GasBuddy.com:

  • U.S. national gasoline prices are almost certain to begin 2014 within a penny or so of where they began 2013. That of course masks all the incredible volatility in between.
  • When the final numbers for 2013 gasoline demand are published, GasBuddy predicts we will see a percent or more increase versus 2012. That will represent the first yearly acceleration in motor fuel demand since 2009.
  • Gasoline prices are below year ago levels in Arkansas; Hawaii, Kansas, Mississippi, Montana, North Dakota, Nebraska, North Carolina, New Jersey, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Oregon, South Dakota, Tennessee, Utah, Washington, Wisconsin, and West Virginia. The largest year-on-year decreases show up in Montana. The largest year-on-year increases pop up in Maryland.
  • The near term trend through New Years’ week calls for prices to drift higher. But January increases are questionable, given the high probability occurrence of very soft midwinter demand numbers.
