No complete road closure on Kilauea Avenue

MEDIA RELEASE

Changes to a road closure on Kilauea Avenue have been announced after Public Works staff met with merchants and the contractor, Yamada and Sons Inc.

There will be no complete road closure on Kilauea Avenue from the Aupuni Street intersection to the Wailoa/Waiakea Stream Bridge.

The road closure was planned to begin Dec. 11.

The new plan, starting Monday, Dec. 9, is a one lane, one-way travel only in the southern direction (Puna bound). This will be in effect 6 a.m.-6 p.m. Monday and Tuesday.

This new traffic pattern will start at the Aupuni Street intersection and end at Wailoa/Waiakea Stream Bridge on the south side.

Off-duty police officers will redirect north bound travelers to Mohouli Street. Businesses in the construction zone will remain open during normal business hours.

Roadwork will begin at the Aupuni Street/Kilauea Avenue intersection Monday and turn lanes may be periodically closed to motorists.

Street parking will be available to merchants within the construction zone during roadwork with the exception of a few hours to work on the mauka lanes on Monday.

Normal traffic patterns will be restored each day after roadwork ends.

The contractor plans to expedite the work, with weather permitting, and hopes to finish the job before the end of 2013.
