Rotary receives $55,000 donation from Mitsubishi Electric Championship

MEDIA RELEASE

Tournament officials from the Mitsubishi Electric Championship at Hualalai have made a charitable donation in the amount of $55,000 to the Rotary Club of Kona.

On hand to present the check late last month were Mitsubishi Electric Championship at Hualalai Tournament Manager Kelly Fliear and Hualalai Golf Course’s Director of Golf Brendan Moynahan, along with two of the tournament’s volunteer chairmen, Kris Hazard and Larry Webb.

The Rotary Club of Kona has played an integral role in helping to organize the tournament volunteer corps since the tournament began in 1997.

Each year, more than 400 volunteers contribute their time, talents and Aloha spirit in servicing the players, sponsors and spectators at the Four Seasons Hualalai Resort to ensure a successful event.

“We couldn’t begin to host such a successful tournament without so much enthusiastic support, including the hundreds of amazing volunteers who work so hard all that week,” said Cayce Blanchard, SVP of corporate communications at Mitsubishi Electric U.S. “To be able to give back in a meaningful way like this is gratifying for all of us.”

“We feel privileged to continue our active role in the community by supporting the volunteer operations,” said Hazard, who has served as a volunteer with the Mitsubishi Electric Championship at Hualalai for 10 years.

Fellow volunteer chairman Webb, who has been with the event since 2005, echoed Hazard’s sentiments, stating, “Our volunteers are the backbone of the tournament’s operations and we certainly could not stage an event of this magnitude without recognizing their efforts.”

Entering its fifth year as title sponsor of the Champions Tour’s season-opening event, Mitsubishi Electric’s support continues to elevate the Big Island community, while allowing the beauty of Hawaii to be showcased around the globe via the international telecast.

“On behalf of the Champions Tour players and their families, president Mike Stevens and our on-site operations team, we are pleased to provide charitable contributions to this deserving non-profit group of outstanding citizens. Kona Rotary reinvests these funds to support Big Island community projects, valuable healthcare programs for kids, and college scholarships,” said the tournament executive director Brian Goin.

“Since the Champions Tour’s arrival on Hawaii in 1997, the tournament has raised over $900,000,000 for local charities,” he said. “We would like to extend a big thank you to Mitsubishi Electric, the Four Seasons Hualalai Resort and the Hawaii Tourism Authority for their valuable partnerships.”

The 2014 Mitsubishi Electric Championship at Hualalai will be held Jan. 15-19. John Cook is the defending champion.
