Prince Resorts Hawaii has announced the completion of a multi-million dollar refresh of the iconic Mauna Kea Beach Hotel and its contemporary neighbor, the Hapuna Beach Prince Hotel at the Mauna Kea Resort on Kohala’s Gold Coast.

“These enhancements have taken the remarkable guest experiences long enjoyed in our resort environment to a new level of comfort, charm and elegance,” said Jon Gersonde, Mauna Kea’s Vice President. “It speaks to our commitment to keep the Mauna Kea Resort at the top tier of luxury beachfront resorts in Hawaii.”

Internationally renowned Barry Design of Santa Monica Calif., which previously managed the renovation of the main building at Mauna Kea Beach Hotel in 2008, directed upgrades of the adjacent Beachfront Wing which sits just footsteps from the white sands and turquoise blue waters of the Kaunaoa Bay.

Eighty-five Beachfront guestrooms including all six, one-bedroom suites have been refreshed in a contemporary Hawaiian motif with natural elements such as coral decor, and color schemes that draw inspiration from the Island’s breathtaking flora and fauna.

The luxury-laden guestrooms feature high-end furnishings, deluxe bedding packages, ceiling fans, flat-screen TVs and wide lanais opening to endless vistas.

Spectacular five-fixture bathrooms boast dual sinks, separate showers, deep soaking tubs with windows welcoming in the natural light, beach and ocean views.

“The upgraded sense of guest comfort and functionality in the Beachfront Wing brings it in line with the earlier completed renovations to the main building,” Gersonde said.

Award-winning Phillpots Interiors of Honolulu led the decor enhancements at the Hapuna Beach Prince Hotel.

The new room design was inspired by Hawaii’s landscape from the mountains to the sea with a palette of warm tones and custom tropical patterns.

The Hawaiian culture is represented by traditional motifs including Polynesian-inspired accent walls and complementing carpeting.

Guests will delight in the new subtle blend of light hardwoods and rattan furniture, beautiful fixtures, custom carpet, overhead and bedside lighting and plush bedding, not to mention new lanai furniture and generously proportioned five-fixture bathroom including double vanities, separate tub and shower.

Rooms are also receiving a technological upgrade with the addition of 55” wall-mounted flat screen HDTV’s to complement high-speed Internet access and plug-in panels.

Enhancements to Hapuna’s pool area include a beautiful stone deck treatment and new lounge furniture. In addition, Hapuna’s lobby and three restaurants, Ocean Terrace, Reef Lounge and Beach Bar, have been refreshed and updated with posh gathering areas and modern furnishings.

“We are pleased with the refresh and look forward to our returning and new guests experiencing renewed levels of comfort and elegance,” Gersonde said.

The Mauna Kea Beach Hotel offers 252 luxury guestrooms and suites in two buildings overlooking the natural white sand Kaunaoa Beach – rated the best beach in the Hawaiian Islands by top travel authorities.

Laurance S. Rockefeller, who founded The Mauna Kea Beach Hotel in 1965, is reputed to have said, “Every great beach deserves a great hotel.”

Almost 50 years later, the inviting timeless ambience of Mauna Kea remains a landmark of luxury on the Big Island’s sunny Kohala Coast.

Equally famous is the hotel’s Robert Trent Jones, Sr. designed Mauna Kea championship golf course, updated by Rees Jones and with the addition of a new clubhouse.

An 11-court Seaside Tennis Club and exceptional facilities for shopping, dining, recreation and spouse and children’s programs combine to offer a truly distinctive and pleasurable vacation experience.

Opened in 1994, the Hapuna Beach Prince Hotel shares 1,839 acres of oceanfront paradise with the legendary Mauna Kea Beach Hotel.

Perfectly nestled into the bluffs above sun-splashed Hapuna Beach, the hotel has a breathtaking architecture that enhances without intruding on the magnificent natural landscape.

Hapuna offers 350 guestrooms, including 36 Oceanfront Suites and the famed 8,000 square-foot freestanding Hapuna Suite. Arnold Palmer and Ed Seay designed its popular links-style 18-hole golf course.

The two hotels combined offer a total of 602 guestrooms and 100,000 square feet of indoor and outdoor meeting space, with on-site business and AV centers, and fulltime banquet and conference services staff.

Prince Resorts Hawaii, Inc., operates three hotels in Hawaii: the Hawaii Prince Hotel Waikiki on Oahu, and the Hapuna Beach Prince Hotel and Mauna Kea Beach Hotel on the Big Island. The company also operates three golf courses: Hawaii Prince Golf Club, Hapuna Golf Course and Mauna Kea Golf Course.
