Kona psychologist honored

Dr. Alex Walter has received the Hawaii Psychological Association award for “Provision of Psychological Services to Rural Communities for 2013.” An awards ceremony was Nov. 15 in Honolulu.

Walter has served the Island of Hawaii as a supervisor at the DOE for eleven years, from which she has recently retired. She now does some private practice and continues her involvement in professional and community organizations.

Walter’s professional history includes years of clinical work, and various professional roles as university professor, director of service and training programs where she designed and implemented internships and post doctoral experiences, and consultant in forensics, neuropsychology and chemical dependency.

Walter has published in the Journal of Abnormal Psychology, the Journal of the American Counseling Association, Counseling To-day, and two of her papers were presented and published at the Annals of the International Council of Psychologists in Melbourne, Austria, and the Annals of the Hamilton, New Zealand Association of Counselors Conference, respectively.

In the Big Island she has served on the Board of the Children’s Justice Center. She was also appointed by the governor to the Mental Health and Substance Abuse Board in the Big Island, where she served for three years as a member and two years as chair.

At present she is secretary for the Hawaii Island Psychologists Association and helps in facilitating Continuing Education credits for behavioral health professionals.

In addition she has recently been elected to be the Big Island’s representative to the state Hawaii Psychological Association for 2014.

With the enthusiastic support of her husband, Dr. Leon Hyman, Walter also volunteers her concert pianist and flamenco dance talents at fundraising activities for various organizations including Mental Health Kokua, Arts of Kona, West Hawaii Community Health Center, Advocats, the Kona Music Society, the Pregnancy Center and the Rotary Club.
