Gabbard bill to pay back furloughed workers to get vote

MEDIA RELEASE

Rep. Tulsi Gabbard has announced a bipartisan bill she co-sponsored to pay back federal workers who have been furloughed during the government shutdown will get a vote Saturday in the House.

The Federal Employee Retroactive Pay Fairness Act (H.R. 3223) will ensure federal employees will receive back pay, regardless of furlough status.

“Every day, more than 25,000 federal workers in Hawaii go to work serving our community,” Gabbard said. “Due to this government shutdown, a majority of these employees have been sent home involuntarily, unsure if or when they will see their next paycheck. Providing backpay for these workers is the right thing to do. While we need to focus on finding a workable solution to end the shutdown immediately, I am glad the House will vote tomorrow to support our unfairly furloughed workers who have been caught in the middle of these political games.”

Hawaii is deeply affected by this government shutdown, and is tied for the second-highest concentration of federal employees in the country. These workers make up about 17.2 percent of the local workforce.

The Obama Administration announced Friday it supports the legislation and encouraged its swift passage.
