Annual I.K.L. karate championship in Kona (Nov. 2)

The Kona Branch of the International Karate League (IKL) hosts its 9th Annual I.K.L. Karate Championship 8:30 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 2 at Kekuaokalani Gymnasium in Kona.

IKL Branches from Hilo, Paauilo, Honokaa, Waimea, North Kohala, Waikoloa, Captain Cook, Kailua-Kona, Kealakehe, Pahala, Keaau, Oahu, and California, will be attending the event.

In addition, other traditional karate schools across Hawaii Island have been invited to participate in the tournament.

A special guest, the Founder and Chief Instructor of the IKL Shihan (Master) Walter K. NISHIOKA of Manoa Valley, Oahu, will be presiding over the event.

The tournament will feature competition in Kata (Forms), Kumite (Sparring), and Kobudo (Weaponry), for children, teenagers, and adults.

Other martial art instructors from different styles will be in attendance and available to the public to answer any questions about their respective style of martial art.

The tournament is open to the public and admission is free. The Hawaii Police Athletic Federation is a sponsor of this event that promotes sportsmanship, respect and good will among its competitors.
