Kamakana’s free concert celebrates the half-way point of Kau Kau Kailua.

Duncan Andrew Kamakanaonakuahiwi Osorio, who uses the stage name Kamakana, graduated from Kamehameha High School. He then spent time in Oregon, California and Michigan honing his musical skills on various projects and attending college.

In 2012, he achieved local notoriety when he recorded a Burger King commercial that featured a modified version of the popular song “Fish and Poi.”

The commercial helped land him a private audition for NBC’s hit show “The Voice.”

Producers subsequently chose Kamakana out of 50,000 other contestants and Maroon 5’s Adam Levine chose Kamakana for his team. Building on his roots in Palolo Valley and his national exposure on “The Voice,” Kamakana continues to create his musical legacy.

Kamakana’s free Kokua Kailua concert on September 15 will be his first concert appearance on Hawaii Island. During Kokua Kailua, Alii Drive becomes a festive pedestrian-only walkway from 1-6 p.m. with vendors, food, and artisans lining the way.

Kamakana will perform at 5 p.m. at Emma’s Square.

The free concert celebrates Kau Kau Kailua when Kailua Village Business Improvement District restaurants offer special values throughout the month. Coupons are available for download in advance and are valid until Sept. 30.
