Police captured a Hilo carjacking suspect Tuesday evening after an all-day search.

Police report Jeremy Todd Rios, 31, of Hilo, was arrested when he walked out of a pasture area at about 6:30 p.m. to Mauna Kea Access Road, and ran into a police officer making checks in the area.

Rios was taken to the Hilo Police cellblock, where he will be held while detectives from the Area I Criminal Investigations Section continue the investigation.

The Mauna Kea Access Road had been closed while police conducted the search, but has reopened to traffic.

Police set up a roadblock Tuesday morning at the entrance to Mauna Kea Access Road off Saddle Road after Rios was seen fleeing into the brush.

The car stolen in the carjacking incident was recovered on Mauna Kea Access Road.

Police were looking for Rios after a black Honda was seen about 7:40 a.m. in a parking lot on Kinoole Street where Rios appeared to be brandishing a handgun.

After driving from the parking lot, Rios collided into a Toyota Tacoma pickup truck at the intersection of Kilauea and Ohea streets.

The driver of the pickup truck suffered injuries and was transported to Hilo Medical Center. The driver’s condition has not been released.

Rios is then alleged to have stolen a white 2007 Honda sedan from a woman who stopped her vehicle in traffic due to the collision and headed toward Saddle Road.

The woman was not injured.

Police set up a roadblock at the entrance to Mauna Kea Access Road and searched for Rios with help from a county helicopter crew.

Earlier Tuesday, police issued a series of alerts, saying they were on the look out for Rios, who “may be armed and dangerous.” The alerts detailed a reckless series of crimes and carjackings in Hilo.

Rios is described as 5-foot-7, 170 pounds with brown hair and brown eyes. Police said he has numerous tattoos including a brass knuckle tattoo on his throat. He was considered armed and dangerous.

Rios is a very dangerous sociopath who has long record. People like him will stop at NOTHING to procure MORE METH. He should be exiled to Antarctica instead of re-incarcerated, released, re-incarcerated here!
Local law had better come down hard on carjacking now or we’ll all be sorry.
    Local hunters- please take aim
