Hawaii 24/7 Staff

Publisher / videographer Baron Sekiya and editor Karin Stanton have been recognized for outstanding news reporting in the Society of Professional Journalists Hawaii Chapter 2012 Excellence in Journalism contest.

In the category of Online News Reporting, their piece “McCormack, Wee add more Lavaman crowns to trophy cabinets” was named one of the top three in the state.

The judges commented: Very interesting subject. Great detail and exposition. Video element was also strong – makes good use of digital medium.

The 2012 SPJ award is the sixth for Hawaii 24/7 in three years, including two first place awards. Previously, the Big Island news website has been recognized for feature reporting, website design and overall news website quality.

“We’re just doing what we love. We’re proud to represent the Big Island and thank our readers for their support,” Sekiya said. “It’s an extra bonus when our peers recognize our work.”

“I’ve covered triathlons in Kona for more than two decades. It seems every race and every athlete has a great story,” Stanton said. “Life as a journalist on the Big Island is always remarkable and memorable. Our job is to share that with readers. It’s the best job in the world. I’m so pleased the judges recognized our passion.”

The winners were announced June 28 at a dinner ceremony in Honolulu. Entries this year were judged by the Indiana Chapter of SPJ and included entries from print, broadcast and online media.
