Authorities are reporting a woman was killed and three people were critically injured Tuesday in two separate crashes along roads in the northern region of the island.

The woman reportedly died and one man was critically injured in a single-vehicle accident at 2:29 p.m. on Queen Kaahumanu Highway in the Kiholo area. The vehicle apparently ran off the roadway into the lava field, ejecting both occupants.

The woman died at the scene and the man was transported by helicopter to the North Hawaii Community Hospital in critical condition.

Shortly before 6 :30 p.m., emergency crews responded to a head-on collision on Kawaihae Road near Anekona Road. One driver was pinned in his vehicle and had to be extricated.

Both drivers were in critical condition when they were transported to the North Hawaii Community Hospital.

A fire official said one driver was in his 70s and the other was in his 20s.
