MEDIA RELEASE

The Lions Club of Kona is proud to announce the awarding of scholarships to deserving Konawaena High School seniors pursuing higher education degrees. Presentations were made May 8 at the Konawaena Senior Awards night.

The 2013 scholarship recipients are:

* Sarah Albrecht — Lions Club of Kona Jonney Pha Hodges Scholarship

* Trevor Tanaka — Lions Club of Kona Service Scholarship

* Dylan Riano — Lions Club of Kona Service Scholarship

* Talmage Nakamoto — Lions Club of Kona Service Scholarship

The scholarships were open to all graduating seniors of Konawaena High School. Recipients are selected based on service to the community, academic achievements and educational goals.

The Jonney Pha Hodges Scholarship further requires students to submit an essay on their plans to pursue a degree in the medical field.

All scholarship recipients were awarded $1,000.

Scholarship Committee chairwoman Norma Matsumoto said, “Our hope for next year is to increase the number of scholarships awarded to encourage students to achieve higher levels of education while still providing service to the community.”

All recipients of the Lions Club of Kona Scholarships and their families are invited to an evening of celebration and recognition July 15 at Teshima Restaurant.

The Lions Club of Kona has 63 active members and meets at 6:30 p.m. the third Monday of every month at Teshimas Restaurant. Lions clubs are a group of men and women who identify needs within the community and work together to fulfill those needs.
