Man dies after being hit by vehicle in Glenwood Friday (May 10)

Fire/rescue crews responded to a 7:40 p.m. alarm Friday (May 10) to the 20.5 mile marker of Highway 11 in Glenwood for a man hit in a vehicle-pedestrian crash.

Crews arrived to find a middle aged man lying in the center of the highway South of Glenwood Road with no signs of life. CPR was performed and the man was taken to Hilo Medical Center where he was later declared dead.

Earlier police were called to scene because the man was reported to be wandering through traffic in poor weather conditions and light misty rain with fog with no street lights in the darkened area. When police arrived they found the vehicle-pedestrian crash.

Both lanes were closed to traffic for hours as police conducted their investigation. One lane was reported to be open to traffic at 11:14 p.m. and both lanes opened later.

The cause of the incident is under investigation.

An unidentified man was killed Friday (May 10) from injuries he received in a motor vehicle/pedestrian crash on Highway 11 in the area of the 20-mile marker in Glenwood.

Responding to a 7:29 p.m. call, Puna patrol officers determined that a 49-year-old Hilo man was operating a 1998 Peterbuilt water truck and traveling north on Highway 11 when he struck a man who was in the northbound lane of the roadway.

Prior to this call, officers were already en route to the same area in response to a report of a man running on the roadway.

Fire Rescue personnel took the man to Hilo Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead at 8:57 p.m.

The driver of the water truck and his 48-year-old wife were not injured.

Police do not suspect alcohol, drugs or speed with respect to the driver.

Traffic Enforcement Unit officers have initiated a negligent homicide investigation and have ordered an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death.

This is the 13th traffic fatality on the Big Island this year compared with 14 at this time last year.

Police traffic investigators have identified the man who was killed Friday (May 10) from injuries he received in a motor vehicle/pedestrian crash on Highway 11 in the area of the 20-mile marker in Glenwood.

The victim was identified as Robert S. Silva, 45, of a Mountain View address.
