Flood advisory issued due to heavy rains in North Hawaii Saturday (May 4)

UPDATED (5/4/2013 at 11:47 PM)

The National Weather Service in Honolulu has issued a flood advisory for Hawaii County until 2:15 a.m. Sunday (May 5). This advisory may be extended if heavy rain continues in the North Hawaii area.

At 11 p.m. weather radar showed moderate to locally heavy rain on the Leeward side of the Kohala Mountains just West of Waimea. The rains have been on and off for the past couple of hours. Other locations in the advisory area include Mahukona.

The area of heavy rain will otherwise remain over mainly rural areas of Kohala.

People should stay away from streams, drainage ditches and low lying areas prone to flooding. The rainfall and runoff will cause hazardous driving conditions due to ponding, reduced visibility and poor braking action.

Do not cross fast flowing or rising water in your vehicle or on foot. Turn around, don’t drown.
