Fire crews and a Hazmat unit were dispatched Monday morning to the courthouse in Kealakekua for a “possible toxic condition.”
The courthouse was evacuated after people began coughing and complaining of irritated throats and eyes, according to the Fire Department.
Crews were alerted shortly after 9 a.m. and moved people from the building out to the open yard area. No-one needed further medical assistance.
The Hazmat crew turned off the central air conditioning and vented the courtroom. The crew also checked the rooms with air monitoring equipment with “negative findings.”
The courthouse, which is formally known as Kea Kea Lani Court House and houses District and Circuit courts, was reopened before 11 a.m.
