A clean sweep for perennial favorite, Kawailiula of Oahu, and its’ kumu Chinky Mahoe.

At the 50th annual Merrie Monarch Festival in Hilo, Kawailiula dominated the men’s categories, winning first place in kane kahiko, auana and kane overall.

Meanwhile, Halau Moahala Ilima took first place in women’s kahiko and wahine overall.

The three-day festival showcases the best of hula on the famous stage at Edith Kanakaole Multi-Purpose Stadium in Hilo.

On Thursday evewning, 12 solo dancers vied for the title of Miss Aloha Hula. This year, the crown went to Manalani Mili Hokoana English of Maui.

On Friday and Saturday nights, the competition featured a total of 29 groups – including 18 wahine (women) and 11 kane (men) halau — in the kahiko (ancient) and auana (modern) categories.

This year was the 50th Merrie Monarch Festival.

Overall Winner

Kawailiula, Chinky Mahoe, Kailua, Oahu – 1,155 points

Wahine Kahiko

1. Halau Mohala Ilima, kumu Mapuana de Silva, Kailua, Oahu – 570 points

2. Hula Halau O Kamuela, Kauionalani Kamanao and Kunewa Mook, Kalihi & Waimanalo, Oahu – 568 points (tie breaker 795 points)

3. Halau Ka Lei Mokihana O Leinaala, Kumu Leinaala Pavao Jardin Kalaheo, Kauai – 568 points (tie breaker 786 points)

4. Ka La Onohi Mai O Haehae, Tracie and Keawe Lopes, Kahauiki, Oahu – 565 points

5. Halau Hula Olana, Kumu Olana and Howard Ai, Puuloa, Oahu – 554 points

Wahine Auana

1. Keolalaulani Halau Olapa O Laka, Aloha Dalire, Heeia, Oahu and Hilo, Hawaii – 585 points

2. Hula Halau O Kamuela, Kauionalani Kamanao and Kunewa Mook, Kalihi & Waimanalo, Hawaii – 583 points

3. Halau Mohala Ilima, kumu Mapuana de Silva, Kailua, Oahu – 582 points

4. Ka La Onohi Mai O Haehae, Tracie and Keawe Lopes, Kahauiki, Oahu – 577 points
