High wind warning for Big Island summits with gusts over 65mph forecast

By Hawaii 24/7 Staff

The National Weather Service in Honolulu has issued a high wind warning for the summit areas of Mauna Loa and Mauna Kea over 8,000 feet until 6 p.m. this evening.

Winds are forecast to be in the 25-50 mph range with gusts over 65 mph.

The strong winds can make driving difficult especially for high profile vehicles. Motorists should use caution while driving.

The Mauna Kea Access Road has been closed to the summit above the Visitor Information Station due to these strong winds.
