MEDIA RELEASE

Mauna Lani Bay Hotel & Bungalows, Hawaii’s premier cultural resort, celebrated its 30th anniversary since opening Feb. 14, 1983.

The occasion was celebrated with a blessing by Kahu David Kaupu, who was there for the grand opening day 30 years ago.

Tokyu Corporation has been the owner of the Mauna Lani Bay since its opening. The resort was developed by a partnership between the former landowner, Francis Hyde Ii Brown, Hawaii’s “Mr. Golf” and Noboru Goto, chairman of Tokyu Corporation of Japan.

The two men shared a love for the sport of golf and a passion for the environment that later lay the foundation of their vision for the resort. They planned a resort retreat that would reward its guests while preserving its history and sense of place.

As the concept evolved, Hawaiian elders gave this unique place the name Mauna Lani, meaning “Mountain Reaching Heaven.” This name reveres Hawaii’s Mother Earth, the volcanoes and their goddess.

For Hawaiians, it is a name that sets the land apart as a place requiring informed land stewardship, or the caring for a special land.

The Mauna Lani Bay will mark the anniversary with a $30 million renovation.
