At 11:29 a.m. Monday, Jan. 21, Hawi Renewable Development Wind Farm tripped offline, causing an underfrequency condition to HELCO’s system.

As a result, HELCO instituted load shedding to protect its equipment, which resulted in power interruptions affecting approximately 4,369 customers in Kohala, Pepeekeo, Kaloko and parts of Hilo.

HELCO employees worked to start additional generation and service was restored to all customers within 7 minutes.

The cause of the interruption is under investigation by Hawi Renewable Development.
