High surf warning for West facing shore of the Big Island until Sunday (Jan 20)

By Hawaii 24/7 Staff

The National Weather Service in Honolulu has issued a high surf warning for West facing shores of the Big Island from 6 p.m. this evening until 6 a.m. Sunday (Jan 20).

Surf along the coastal areas from Upolu Point to South Point will rise to 10-15 feet tonight. Expect ocean water to occasionally sweep across portions of beaches. Oceanfront residents, campers and beach goers are urged to be on alert for high and dangerous surf conditions.

Coastal areas can expect very strong breaking waves, shore breaks and strong longshore and rip currents. Anyone entering the water could face significant injury or death.

Boaters should be aware of an increased number of surfers and body boarders using harbor channels to access surfing areas. Breaking waves may occasionally impact harbors making navigating harbor channels dangerous. Hawaii County Civil Defense is advising that all coastal and boating activities be postponed until conditions are safe..

Boat owners in the affected areas should take measures to secure their vessels and all property owners should take measures to secure their property.  All safety measures should be completed before nightfall

A small craft advisory is in effect until 6 a.m. Saturday (Jan 19) for all Hawaiian waters except Maalaea Bay.
