Alumni football games bring in more than $20,000

Hilo got on the board early in the first quarter and Waiakea tied it up in the first half with a 70 yard TD pass. Hilo went ahead at the half, but Waiakea had 2 chances to score inside the 5 yard line. Hilo stepped up and held Waiakea at the one inch line. Two TD’s and a field goal wrapped up the score for Hilo as they went on to win 24-7.

Hilo raised $3,750 for the Childrens Hospital and Waiakea raised $1,675 for the Childrens Hospital, $390 for the Waiakea Cheerleaders and $275 for the volleyball team. $6,090 total raised for kids!

In one of the most exciting games in alumni football history, Konawaena pulled out a win with 28 seconds left on a quarterback boot leg.

Kealakehe was down 30-6 early in the game and shocked the capacity crowd by fighting back to take a 31-30 lead with a little over 3 minutes left.

Konawaena took the kick off to the 40 then managed to get the ball to the five ard line. With two goal line stand plays Kealakehe kept them out of the endzone until with 28 seconds to go, Konawaena scored to win the game.

The crowd was crazy for their guys as they screamed for 3 solid minutes.

The big winners were Big Island junior athletes, as the game earned $10,877.

In the first ever alumni football clash between Kohala and Honakaa 101 guys suited out and played inspiring footbll before Kohala hit a swing pass that went for 45 yards and the first score of the game. The extra point was just missed and Kohala Alumni went up 6-0 with less then 8 minutes to play. On the next offensive play Honokaa Alumni through a little swing pass that went for 75 yards and their only score! The extra point was good and the 7-6 score would hold up as Honokaa went on to win.

The real winners were the youth football programs and Honokaa high school athletics. Honokaa raised more than $9,000 and Kohala raised almost $5,000.
