Police urge us to drive with caution as public school starts Thursday (Jan 3)

MEDIA RELEASE

Hawaiʻi Island police are reminding motorists that Thursday (January 3) is the first day children return to public schools from the holiday break. Motorists should expect an increase in traffic, especially in school zones during morning and afternoon hours.

Sergeant Robert Pauole of the Traffic Services Section suggests that drivers adjust their daily schedule and start their day earlier to avoid the urge to rush while commuting to work.

Also, while driving in school zones, drivers should use caution and be attentive of children walking to school and crossing in crosswalks.

Additionally, Sergeant Pauole reminds motorists that drivers must use vehicle headlights from a half hour after sunset to a half hour before sunrise and at any other time when visibility is diminished due to insufficient light or unfavorable atmospheric conditions. The use of headlights during those hours and conditions provides better visibility for the driver and for other motorists and pedestrians.

Texting and driving can be a deadly combination. Texting drivers are 23 times more likely to be in an accident.

In fact, a car crashes once every five minutes, on average, while a driver is texting.

This compelling video illustrates how completely unnecessary this bad habit is and the dangers:

As part of its “It Can Wait campaign,” AT&T also conducted a poll of commuters.

It showed that:

* They know texting while driving is unsafe – 95% said reading an incoming text or email while driving is unsafe, and 98% said sending a text or email while driving is unsafe.

* More of them are doing it – Six in 10 (59%) said they never texted/emailed while driving three years ago. Only five in 10 (51%) said they never text and drive now.

* Many of them say texting/emailing while driving has become a habit – One third (32%) of the commuters who text and drive said it was a habit.

AT&T reminds drivers that no text is worth dying for – it can wait.
