Fire/rescue crews responded to a 1:05 p.m. alarm Tuesday (Jan 1) to a two vehicle accident on Highway 19 near the 43 mile marker.

A full-sized van and car crashed causing extensive damage to the front of both vehicles and leaving seven injured. Six victims were able to get out of the vehicles on their own while one in the car had to be taken out by firefighters.

One victim was airlifted via Chopper 2 and two were transported by ambulance to Hilo Medical Center. Four victims were transported to North Hawaii Community Hospital by ambulance. All patients were transported with precautions due to possible spinal cord injuries.

Both lanes of Highway 19 were blocked due to the crash with traffic routed through Honokaa as a detour. At 7:31 p.m. police reported that the highway had reopened to traffic.
