County offices to issue state ID cards beginning Wednesday (Jan 2)

MEDIA RELEASE

The County of Hawai’i will add staff at its Hilo and Kona driver’s license offices in January to try to expedite applications for licenses and state identification cards, but county managers are asking members of the public to be patient if they encounter unusually long lines or delays during the first week of the New Year.

Members of the public are also encouraged to delay their transactions at the Hilo and Kona driver’s license offices until after Jan. 8 if possible to avoid what could be longer-than-normal wait times as the county assumes some new responsibilities.

Driver License offices in Hilo and Kona will begin issuing State Identification Cards for the first time on Wednesday, Jan. 2, and unusually long lines are possible during the transition.

Act 310 (SLH 2012) transferred responsibility for State ID cards from the Attorney General’s office to the State Department of Transportation beginning January 1, 2013, and County driver’s license offices are assuming that responsibility on behalf of state DOT. That means members of the public in Hawaii County will be able to apply for a state ID at the Hawaii county driver license offices in Hilo and Kona.

Other changes affecting state identification cards will take effect on Jan. 1, including:

  • No appointments are required to apply for a state ID card, which will be available at Hilo and Kona Driver License Offices.
  • Renewals by mail will be offered to citizens who are 80 years of age or older. Those renewal applications must be submitted with proper documentation.
  • Minimum age for state ID is 10 years old

Current fees for State IDs are $20, $15 for people 65 and older. Documents required to obtain State IDs are similar to those documents required to obtain a driver license. These requirements can be viewed at: http://hawaii.gov/dot/hawaiistateid

For questions regarding State IDs after January 1, please contact the driver license offices in Hilo or Kona by email at vehiclerl@co.hawaii.hi.us or by phone at 961-2222.
