Brushfire closes Highway 11 near Naalehu Wednesday night (Dec 19)

Hawaii County Police have closed Highway 11 near the 63 mile marker East of Naalehu due to a brushfire. Police advise motorists to avoid the area due to this closure.

One lane of Highway 11 remains closed at the 63 mile marker near Naalehu. Use caution while driving in that area.

Fire/rescue crews responded to a 9:26 p.m. alarm Wednesday (Dec 19) to a brushfire near the 63 mile marker of Highway 11.

The fire burned in pasture land on the makai side of Highway 11 which was shut down for about three hours during firefighting operations. Trade winds in the area were at 20-35 mph.

Twelve firefighters fought the blaze and had it under control by 10:45 p.m. The cause of the fire was reported to be undetermined.
