Pohakuloa Training Area opens areas to hunting this weekend (Dec 1–2)

POHAKULOA TRAINING AREA, Hawaii— U.S. Army Garrison Pōhakuloa will open the Keamuku Maneuver Area for bow hunting of goats and pigs on Dec. 1. The area will be closed on Dec. 2 for animal population. Hunting of Mouflan and sheep is not allowed.

Check in time is 5 a.m. each day; check out not later than 7:30 p.m. Hunters must check in and out at the Kilohana Hunter’s Check-in Station between Mile Marker 43 and 44 on Saddle Road.

For hunting in the Keamuku enter and exit through Gates 2 (MM 44), 7 (MM 51) and 10 (MM 52) on Saddle Road or Gates 11 (MM 7) and 14 (MM12) on the Mamalahoa Highway. Park inside of all gates, do not park along the highway or road while hunting.

Pōhakuloa will also open Training Areas 1-4 for shotgun bird hunting on Dec. 1 and 2. No shotgun slugs are allowed.

All hunters must check in and check out at either the Kilohana Hunter’s Check in Station located between Mile Markers 43 and 44 on Saddle Road or the Huluhulu Hunter’s Check in Station located at the intersection of Mauna Kea Access Road and Saddle Road—near Mile Marker 28.

Check in time is 5 a.m. each day; check out is at 7:30 p.m. No early access to hunting areas is allowed.

Hunting passes will be available at both check-in stations on Friday Nov. 30 after 5 p.m. There is a new requirement to hunt at Pōhakuloa. The temporary hunting pass now includes a Disclaimer and Waiver of Liability statement. All hunters must read and sign the statement and place the pass on their vehicle dashboard. Hunters who do not have a hunting pass with a signed waiver statement on their dash will be barred from hunting for 30 days.Hunting passes are valid for Dec. 1 and 2 only.

PTA is extremely dry and fires can start easily. No smoking or open flames are allowed in all training and hunting areas. Please report all fires to the PTA Federal Fire Department at 969-2447 or 969-2448.

No firearms allowed in the Keamuku, alcoholic beverages, all-terrain vehicles, dirt bikes or recreational vehicles are allowed in the training and hunting areas. Please close all gates when entering or leaving hunting areas.
