Motorcyclist dies in Highway 130 collision

A motorcyclist in his late 50s died Thursday afternoon in a collision at the intersection of Highway 130 and Leilani Avenue in Pahoa.

Emergency crews were called to the scene at 3:45 p.m. and found the motorcycle and an SUV had collided on the state highway.

The motorcyclist died at the scene, according to a Fire Department release.

The driver of the SUV sustained minor injuries and refused treatment.

Police shut down the highway shortly after 5 p.m. and re-opened it t 9 p.m.

The cause of the collision is listed as ‘undetermined’ in the Fire Department release.

A 65-year-old Pāhoa man died Thursday (November 29) from injuries he sustained in a motor vehicle/motorcycle crash at the intersection of Route 130 and Leilani Avenue in Pāhoa.

Responding to a 3:34 p.m. call, Puna patrol and Traffic Enforcement Unit officers determined that the 65-year-old man was operating a 2003 Suzuki motorcycle and traveling north on Route 130 when a 1999 Lexus multi-purpose vehicle being operated by a 66-year-old Pāhoa man failed to yield the right of way and made a left turn onto Leilani Avenue.

The motorcycle operator was not wearing a helmet and was dead at the scene.

The driver of the Lexus was not injured. His wife, a 64-year-old woman, went to the Hilo Medical Center by private vehicle and was treated and released with minor injuries.

It is unknown at this time if speed, alcohol or drugs were involved.

The motorcycle operator was taken to Hilo Medical Center and officially pronounced dead at 9:19 p.m.

The name of the motorcycle operator is being withheld pending positive identification and notification of the next of kin.

Traffic Enforcement Unit Officers have initiated a negligent homicide investigation and have ordered an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death.

Police ask that anyone with information about the crash call Officer Tuckloy Aurello at 961-8119.

This is the 37th traffic fatality on the Big Island this year compared with 19 at this time last year.

Big Island police have identified a Puna man who died Thursday (November 29) from injuries he sustained in a motor vehicle/motorcycle crash at the intersection of Route 130 and Leilani Avenue as 65-year-old Bo Lozoff of Kalapana.

    Really sad to hear that. Bo was a character and he will be missed. He really enjoyed the lava flows.
