By Hawaii 24/7 Staff

Fire/rescue crews responded to a 3:13 a.m. alarm Sunday (Nov 18) to 82-6023 Kahauloa Road in the Kealakekua Bay area for a structure fire.

Firefighters found a 20×30 foot two-story wood structure with a metal roof engulfed in flames with neighbors using garden hoses to protect the surrounding areas. The structure contained a garage, kitchen and living area on the first floor while the second floor had an office/storage area.

The structure had collapsed before fire crews got to the scene. A main house which was located next to the structure, but not connected, was spared in the blaze. Crews had arrived on scene at 3:34 a.m. and had the fire under control by 4 a.m.

The loss was estimated to be $110,000 with $250,000 of property saved from burning. The occupants of the residence were evacuated to a neighbor’s home and volunteers of the American Red Cross of Hawaii are assisting them. The cause of the fire is under investigation by a fire inspector.
