HFIA extends ‘Growing Koa in Hawaii Nei’ registration

There is still time to register for the Hawaii Forest Industry Association’s (HFIA’s) “Growing Koa in Hawaii Nei” Symposium, Friday, Nov. 16 and Saturday Nov. 17 at Kilauea Military Camp, Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.

On Friday, Nov. 16, presentations will take place in the Ohia Room from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and will include a keynote speech, “The Right Koa for You”, by Dr. Charles Michler, Director of the Hardwood Tree Improvement and Regeneration Center (HTIRC) at Purdue University and the Tropical HTIRC in Hawaii.

A reception will follow the presentations 5:30-7 p.m.

On Saturday, Nov. 17 from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., a field trip to Keauhou Ranch in Ka‘u is scheduled.

Presentations by leading experts in koa research and management will include the following topics:

* Who’s Growing Koa and How Many Acres are Involved?

* Facilitating Forest Recovery Following Cattle Grazing at Hawaii Volcanoes National Park

* Reforestation to Preserve & Protect Native Hawaiian Species at Hakalau Forest National Wildlife Refuge

* Koa Case Studies

* Plantation Establishment Techniques

* Improvement Efforts to Date: Hawaii Tree Improvement Research Center

The symposium is open to students, land managers, farmers, ranchers, policymakers, government agencies, community groups, educators and the general public.

The registration fee is $120 for non-HFIA members and includes a $50 HFIA membership; $85 for HFIA members and $70 for students. Cost for the field trip is $10.
