Candidate forum on ag issues at Konawaena (Oct. 10)

The Kona Coffee Farmers Association and The Hawaii Tropical Fruit Growers Association will hold a Candidate Forum on “To Protect and Promote Hawaii Agricultural Products.”

The forum is 6-7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 10 at the Konawaena Elementary School Cafeteria.

Candidates for County Council and State Legislature in North and South Kona will address pressing agricultural issues at the forum.

Forum attendees will include Brenda Ford and Maile David, candidates for County Council District 6; Dru Kanuha, Council District 7; Karen Eoff, Council District 8; Denny Coffman and Dave Bateman, candidates for State House District 5; Nicole Lowen and Roy Ebert, candidates for State House District 6; Josh Green and Jeff LaFrance, candidates for Senate District 3.

At the beginning of the session, candidates will be given two minutes to introduce themselves to the audience. The remaining time will be given to questions from the moderator and written questions from the audience. Candidates’ replies will be timed to two minutes.

Questions will center on how county and state governments can protect and promote Hawaii’s agricultural products, from Kona coffee, tropical fruits, and macadamia nuts to food sustainability and security. What policies do these candidates propose to improve protection and promotion of local agricultural products?
