WADA, WTC team up for ‘Say No! To Doping’ day

MEDIA RELEASE

The World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) and World Triathlon Corporation (WTC) will join forces at the Ironman World Championship presented by myList in Kailua-Kona, this week to promote anti-doping and to raise awareness for clean sport.

Tuesday, Oct. 9, was designated as the ‘Say NO! To Doping’ day, while the anti-doping activities throughout the week will be based on the WTC ‘Ask Me Why I Am TRUE’ campaign.

WADA and WTC are also teaming up at the Ironman Village Expo where outreach activities will target the nearly 2,000 professional and age group athletes competing in the 2012 Ironman World Championship.

In addition, the outreach team shared its anti-doping message with the next generation of triathletes at the ‘Keiki Dip N Dash’ children’s event.

The young athletes received anti-doping information and promotional materials, which are designed to educate them on how to make the right decisions later in their triathlon careers.

“WTC is pleased to partner with WADA to promote clean sport for all triathletes, both professional and age group, and to set the right example for the next generation of our sport,” said Andrew Messick, chief executive officer of WTC. “I encourage all athletes to be a part of the ‘Ask Me Why I Am TRUE’ campaign, and to remain true to the principles of clean sport.”

The on-site anti-doping outreach efforts will reach a conclusion on Saturday, Oct. 13 (race day), when nearly 2,000 athletes embark on the 140.6-mile journey that presents the ultimate test of body, mind and spirit to hear the coveted words: “You are an Ironman.”

“WADA is excited to be working hand-in-hand with WTC on this anti-doping awareness initiative and to continue promoting the values of clean sport,” said WADA President John Fahey.

“The opportunity to interact and educate young athletes is vital in the fight against doping and we are confident the partnership with WTC will bring some lasting benefits to these athletes,” he said.
